Spring launch checklist
A smooth first launch is mostly about catching small problems at home instead of at the ramp. Work through these four areas the week before you go.
Wake up the electrical system
Batteries lose charge over the winter even when disconnected. Fully charge them before launch day, then check terminals for corrosion and make sure connections are tight.
If a battery won't hold a charge after a full charging cycle, it's usually time to replace it rather than risk a dead start on the water.
Check lines and fenders
Look for chafe, stiffness and UV damage on dock lines. A frayed line is the one that parts in a gust. Fenders should hold air and have intact eyes.
Inspect safety gear
Count life jackets against the number of people you carry, check extinguisher gauges and expiry dates, and refresh anything in your safety kit that has expired.
Test the trailer
Hook up and test every trailer light before you leave the driveway, check the rollers or bunks for wear, and make sure the transom straps release cleanly.
